Sometimes, one dark moment is all it takes to turn your world black...
For 24-year old Dominic Kinkaide, that moment took place on the night of his high school graduation. One dark incident changed him forever. He's a hardened actor now, famous in the eyes of the world, but tortured in his own. He doesn't care about much of anything, except for losing himself in the roles that he plays.
23-year old Jacey Vincent doesn't realize how much her father's indifference has affected her. She is proof that sometimes it isn't one specific moment that wrecks a person, but rather it's an absence of moments. She's like a bird with a broken wing-strong yet fragile, as she tries to float through life, finding acceptance in the arms of random guys, one after the other... to fill the void that her father left in her.
Until she meets Dominic.
After jaded Dominic and strong-willed Jacey are thrown together, his secret and her issues create a dark and damaged energy that will soon turn their attraction to each other into an explosive storm.
Even though when the clouds have cleared and the dust has settled, both of them are almost obliterated... they've learned a priceless lesson.
Sometimes, before we fall... we fly.
My Review
3.75 angsty stars!
First, I have to admit I had difficulty reading and rating this book. I felt that there were parts that I loved and there were parts that I didn't particularly care for.
Second, I haven't read any of the other books from this series. I realized that the characters have been introduced in the previous books. Apart from that I absolutely have no idea about these characters, whether or not they were hideous or acted like an ass during the first two books. So I came into this without any idea at all.
What made this a difficult read for me wasn't because of the writing. I thought it was superb. I really enjoyed the prose and the dialogue between the characters. It was the angst and Dom. I honestly had a hard time forgiving the guy for being an ass throughout most of the book.
I get that there are things that happened in his past that made him into this guilt-ridden and bitter individual. And his story was heartbreaking, by the way, but I was seriously tempted to smash my Kindle against the wall for the things he said and did.
Jacey, I actually liked. She was assertive without being pushy. And while I didn't like her leading Brand on, I did appreciate the fact that she owned up to leading him on and ending their "relationship."
I also liked the fact that when Dom and Jacey first met, it wasn't insta-love or lust on both sides. That worked really well for me. To me it was more realistic especially since Dom is supposed to be an actor and Jacey is a waitress.
So those things, I liked. Now onto the parts that I wasn't too crazy about. The Sin factor. Sin is Dom's brother and he was part of the reason why Dom became a broken man. But neither Sin nor Dom knew about Sin's role until the end of the book when it was finally revealed. I can't say anymore without giving any spoilers but it was just, "Huh?" And then after years of hating the wrong guy, Dom found out the truth and it was like, "Okay, fine." That was a little anticlimactic for me.
Second, the epilogue was a little weird. Okay. A lot weird. I felt like I was suddenly reading a paranormal book. I liked the idea behind it but the way it was done or presented didn't work for me.
Apart from those issues, I really enjoyed reading this book. This book would be perfect for people who love tortured heroes and angst. Lots and lots of angst. Anyone who is up for those elements should try this one. As for moi, I'm definitely looking up more titles from Courtney Cole. I am in love with her writing style.
