Blurb
What
rules would you break for the one you love? What lies would you tell?
Three
weeks before their wedding day, Nicola and Greg discover that they may have the
same mother.
They
met when Greg joined the San Francisco newspaper where Nicola is the travel
editor. After six months, eager to start a life together and raise a family,
they decide to marry.
When
Nicola finally meets his family in Seattle, and mentions the circumstances of
her adoption, Greg’s horrified mother is forced to reveal the shameful secret
she has kept for 36 years.
As
they struggle to deal with her revelation, their relationship is challenged and
strained. If his mother’s suspicions are true, they will be forced into a
devastating choice: break all of society’s rules and fight for their love, or
break their hearts and give each other up.
It
will be the greatest test their newfound love has faced – and their love may
not survive.

Exclusive Excerpt
Scene: Greg has taken Nicola to Seattle to
meet his family: mother Mona, stepfather Edward, half-sister Janine. Nicola has
just shown photos of her family to Mona and Janine.
“They all
look different to you,” commented Mona.
“Oops, I did
it again!” exclaimed Nicola. “I’m adopted. I always forget to tell people
that.”
Janine turned
to scrutinize her. “Actually, you look a lot like us. You could be my sister.”
She had blue
eyes like Greg and Mona, although Edward’s were brown. All four of them had dark
hair. Edward’s wispy hair was more gray than anything, but Nicola could see in
family photographs on the walls that it had been dark.
With a laugh,
Nicola said, “You wouldn’t believe how many people have thought Greg is my
brother.” She heard Mona, on her left, gasp sharply, and she turned to her.
The older
woman’s face had gone pale, her eyebrows two dark slashes above large blue
eyes, the pupils dilated now in what looked like shock.
“What is it?”
asked Nicola, worried. She grasped her hand. “Are you okay?” She looked up with
relief as Greg and his father came back into the living room.
But when
Nicola turned back to Mona, Mona smiled brightly and patted her hand. “Fine. So
you’re adopted, you said? Was that in San Francisco?”
Nicola
nodded, but still regarded her with concern. Mona had looked more than shocked;
she had stared at Nicola with something like horror. It had lasted for only a
second, but Nicola was convinced she had seen it.
