{Blog Tour}Excerpt+Giveaway: Always You by Missy Johnson

Book: Always You
Author: Missy Johnson
Genre: New Adult Contemporary
Tour Organized by: Indie Sage, LLC

Synopsis:

I was thrilled when I was offered a graduate teaching position at the prestigious Tennerson Girls Academy. At twenty-three, this would be my first ‘real’ teaching assignment. Working at the elite boarding school, home to the daughters of some of the wealthiest people in the world, was a great opportunity that I would’ve been stupid to pass up.

One week into my new job, and I suddenly had no idea why I chose high school…I was a seventeen year old boy once, I knew how teenage girls behaved.

You can’t even imagine the hell of trying to teach thirty, hormonal driven seventeen year olds who have been cooped up, away from any male contact.

I could handle the whispers every time I entered the room. I could even handle the obvious attempts at gaining my attention. What I couldn’t handle was her…

Rich bitches and way too many rules. Was it any wonder that I hated school?

Add to that the lack of male contact, and I was going insane. Like literally. I wasn’t used to this. A year ago I was normal. I had a boyfriend, friends and a loving family. There is nothing normal about me anymore, and nobody here lets me forget that.

My name is Wrenn, and I’m only here because my aunt took me in after what happened, but my aunt also happens to be the headmistress of this academy…Can you see my problem?

I’m hated for my lack of money, and I’m hated for who my Aunt is.

Then he arrived. Dalton Reed. My new history teacher.

Slowly, he helped me see that even in the worst situations, there is always hope.

“It’s just my mom and I. Dad died when I was fifteen. I’ve always wanted to be a teacher, though originally I wanted to go with elementary.”

“Why did you go with high school?” I asked curiously.

He shrugged. “Last minute decision,” he said with a smile.

I laughed. “Oh, I bet you’re regretting that now,” I teased.

“I have no idea what you mean.” He looked at me innocently, and then his face broke into a smile. “Okay, teaching teenage girls is pure hell.”

I giggled. “Come on, it can’t be that bad. A couple of hundred girls, all thinking you’re a god? That’s got to boost the ego.”

“A couple of hundred girls all under the age of eighteen,” he corrected dryly.

“I’m not,” I said lightly, surprised by what was coming out of my mouth.

“Yeah, well you’re the exception,” he said. The exception. I liked being the exception. I met his gaze, his eyes burning into mine. My face began to heat. How could I not read into things when he was staring at me like that? I felt naked under his gaze.

Release Day Launch: Deeer by Robin York

We are extremely excited to tell you that Robin York's DEEPER has finally been released! DEEPER is a New Adult contemporary romance being published by Random House’s Bantam imprint and is the 1st novel in Robin York’s Caroline and West Series. This book is an absolute must read!

Deeper Cover   DEEPER Synopsis: In this New Adult debut by Robin York, a college student is attacked online and must restore her name—and stay clear of a guy who’s wrong for her, but feels so right. When Caroline Piasecki’s ex-boyfriend posts their sex pictures on the Internet, it destroys her reputation as a nice college girl. Suddenly her once-promising future doesn’t look so bright. Caroline tries to make the pictures disappear, hoping time will bury her shame. Then a guy she barely knows rises to her defense and punches her ex to the ground. West Leavitt is the last person Caroline needs in her life. Everyone knows he’s shady. Still, Caroline is drawn to his confidence and swagger—even after promising her dad she’ll keep her distance. On late, sleepless nights, Caroline starts wandering into the bakery where West works. They hang out, they talk, they listen. Though Caroline and West tell each other they’re “just friends,” their feelings intensify until it becomes impossible to pretend. The more complicated her relationship with West gets, the harder Caroline has to struggle to discover what she wants for herself—and the easier it becomes to find the courage she needs to fight back against the people who would judge her. When all seems lost, sometimes the only place to go is deeper.
Advance praise for DEEPER: “The perfect new adult story . . . West will make you swoon!”New York Times bestselling author Monica Murphy
“Beautifully written and full of swoony tender moments, toe-curling chemistry, and delicious, twisty angst . . . Stop whatever you’re doing and read this book.”—Christina Lauren, author of the Beautiful Bastard series

Excerpt: Meet West (from Caroline’s POV)
West’s eyes go wide. “Jesus, Caroline, did I hit you?”

He stands, stepping close, reaching for me. It’s as if he completely forgets he’s beating the shit out of Nate, and he just comes for me. The look in his eyes, the outstretched hand—it’s so much like the first time West reached for me, more than a year ago, that I have a moment of déjà vu. My knees buckle, which annoys me. My body is the enemy right now—my incompetent knees, that noise my throat decided to make, my leaking nose, and the pounding pain in my face. Not to mention my heart, which is trying to escape my chest by flinging itself violently against my ribs.

West’s hand lands on my waist, steady and firm, and it’s stupid. My body is stupid. Because his hand feels kind of awesome. Obviously I’m concussed. West is the one who hit me, probably, and he’s definitely the one who hit Nate, who— Fuck. Nate is sprawled out on the floor, bleeding from the mouth. Worse, I can’t really bring myself to focus on Nate, because West’s other hand landed on my shoulder briefly, and now he’s lifting my chin. The blood makes his fingers slippery. I’m bleeding on him. And I like it. This happens with West. He’s only touched me once before, but it isn’t the kind of thing a girl forgets. God, there are so many, many reasons this is not good, though. Most of them aren’t even health-related. For starters, I’m not into guys who punch people. I’m not into guys at the moment, period. And if I were, I wouldn’t be into West, because West is trouble, and I’m allergic.
“You’re bleeding,” he says.
“You hit me.”
“Let me see.” He tugs at my wrist, and I let him drag my hand away from my nose, because basically I will let West Leavitt do anything. It’s possible that he’s some kind of magical creature. I mean, he’s not. I know he’s not. He’s a twenty-year-old sophomore at Putnam College, majoring in biology. He shelves books at the library, waits tables on weekends at the Gilded Pear—which is the only fancy restaurant in Putnam—and works the overnight shift at the bakery in town. All that on top of at least a couple of shady, unofficial sources of income, plus classes, makes him a busy guy.

He’s tall—around six feet, maybe a little taller—with messy brown hair, light blue-green eyes, and a great tan. He’s a guy who goes to my college. That’s all. But that is not all. His face is . . . You know how they say human beings are more attracted to symmetrical faces? Well, West’s face is slightly off in every conceivable way. One of his eyebrows tilts up a little bit, and the other one is bisected by a thin white scar. His eyes are a color that isn’t actually a color, with these tiny little flecks that sometimes look shiny, and I don’t understand how that’s possible. His mouth is wider than it ought to be, which makes him look like a smart-ass every time he smiles or almost smiles or thinks, vaguely, about smiling. His nose must have been broken once—or maybe more than once—because it’s not quite where it’s supposed to be. It’s shifted a titch to the left. And honestly? I think his ears are too small.

When he looks right at me, I can barely make words. That’s why I’m standing here, bleeding, letting him  inspect my nose.

My Review

Deeper or nothing.

It doesn't seem fair to label this book as NA because to me, it felt way more than that. At first glance, it looks like any other NA book out there. Good girl heroine falling for the guy that's all wrong for her. But when you get to the center of it, the story just pulls in and it's all kinds of amazing.

Caroline Piasecki has her life planned out. She'll go to law school, get an internship, practice law and become a judge. Everything is right on schedule until her ex-boyfriend posted explicit photos of her on the web. Suddenly, Caroline became that girl.

West Leavitt also has a plan. Finish college, enter med school, become a doctor. He's doing all of it to save his family out of poverty. West and Caroline were never close, although they live across the hall from each other, until that day when West stood for Caroline and beat up her ex-boyfriend.

Live.Breathe.Fight.Be who you are.Be better.Be fierce.

This book hit all the right notes for me. It's tender, angsty and thought-provoking. It went beyond the usual cliche that plague the NA genre. This book actually made me think.

My heart bled for Caroline and what she went through. And it wasn't just because of the humiliation that she suffered, it was the fact that the whole thing changed everything for her. She was suddenly questioning every decision she's ever made.

West was a wonderful character. He works three jobs, sells pot and uses sex in exchange for favors but he's doing all of it because of his family. Everything he's done wasn't for him.

I cried when I read about what he's done for his little sister was born. Knowing that his little sister was sleeping too much because she was starving. OMG! I cried during one of his inner monologue when he talked about not being able to get food for them, asking for secondhand onesies, looking out for places who's giving out free formulas. Shit! That made me sob my eyes out. Although, some of his activities were morally objectionable, you can't help but still root for him because you know why he's doing it.

I loved how Caroline and West's relationship developed throughout the book. While they were clearly attracted to each from the very beginning, they didn't act on those attraction. It took them quite a long time to kiss but when it finally did...

I appreciated the slow burn in their relationship. The fact that the author took the time to actually build the characters instead of just throwing one plot device after another was refreshing. You get to know both Caroline and West and journey with them. The slow burn suited me just fine.

There, in the bakery, while the rest of the world was sleeping, time buckled and we found something outside of it. We became us in that kitchen. Long before he kissed me, I passed a whole lifetime of West, bathed in yellow light, baptized in lukewarm tap water, consecrated at sunrise when we broke a loaf open and looked.

The writing is just phenomenal. Robin York can make you feel all kinds of emotions by just a word. It's very nuanced in a way that's rarely seen in this genre. I appreciated that this book didn't rely so much on plot device as it did on solid characterization. It was the perfect book for me.

Now, I have to warn you that this book ends on a cliffhanger. As much as I hate cliffhangers, this one isn't really that bad and it's actually necessary. It's necessary in a sense that there are things that both have to deal with. I, for one, am looking forward to July.

Rating: 5 Stars!!
