The Boxed Set Experience

What is your favorite part about the experience of publishing such a large boxed set?

Kaylea Cross: I love reaching a new audience with my work and being able to pool our strengths/resources as a team!

Toni Anderson: Getting to know some new authors and hopefully reaching more readers. I don’t think any of us could have achieved what we have achieved without all 10 of us working extremely hard.

Sharon Hamilton: All of us have strengths and weaknesses, but together we do something better than any of us could do on our own.

When you began the project, did you imagine your anthology would go as far in the lists as it has?

Jill Sanders: Yes! When Dana and I started this project, we hoped it would get this far and we couldn't be happier. I'm so proud of all the hard work each of the authors has put towards this effort and couldn't be happier at the outcome.

Dana Marton: You bet! I believe in visualization. And if you’re going to wish on a star, might as well wish big. I always visualize #1!

Any plans for another boxed set?

Lori Ryan: I think most of us will want a break before the next one, but, yes. We’ll probably do either another big set or some smaller ones. We knew that going in and are taking notes on what works and what doesn’t. We’ll be a well-oiled machine for the next one. But, I personally want a nap first!

Toni Anderson: It’s been a lot of fun, but it is harder work than I anticipated. No plans for another box set as yet. I’ll never say never but the writing has to come first :)

Can you tell us if you’re working on any future books:

Rebecca York: I’m always working on new books.  Right now I have a romantic suspense under contract to Sourcebooks.  They’ve titled it Unfinished Business, but I’m hoping to change that because it’s about a killer stalking a high school reunion class.  I’m also trying to decide which indie book to write next—one of my science fiction romances or one of my Decorah Security books.

Debra Burroughs: I just released The Lake House Secret, a Jenessa Jones Mystery: Book 1 last week. My next book, which will be out in February 2014, will be Book 6 in my Paradise Valley Mystery series.

Marie Astor: I am currently working on a new romantic suspense series involving betrayal, revenge, and corporate espionage. I'm still mulling over ideas that I have, so I'm afraid I can't give more details at the moment. Toni Anderson: I have a brand new book coming out next month called Her Last Chance. Excerpt from IGNITED by Kaylea Cross:

“Almost there,” he said over his shoulder, pulling her along in his wake.

The sudden loud blare of horns made them both snap their heads to their right. 

A white delivery-style truck was barreling up the first available unclogged street, right toward the tall buildings on the opposite side of the intersection a half block away. Hunter stopped walking so fast that Khalia bumped into his back. Before she could retreat a step she felt the unnatural stillness in him, a silent tension that made her jerk her head around to stare at the truck. 

It was moving too fast and showed no sign of slowing down. Everyone else was staring now too. The street dead ended at the tall rows of buildings lining it, and there was no way the truck could turn the corner given its speed. Horns were still blaring as the vehicle whizzed past other traffic at breakneck speed. She watched in astonishment as it blew through the stop light and hurtled straight toward the building across the dead end intersection.

Hunter whirled and grabbed her shoulders, pushing her toward the ground. “Get down!” he yelled.

What? Too stunned to protest, Khalia sprawled flat on the pavement. The breath whooshed out of her as Hunter’s hard weight landed on her back, squashing her against the burning hot sidewalk. Someone near her screamed. A split second later she heard the loud bang of an impact, then the still air was ripped apart by a violent explosion. The force of it tore over her like a raging wind, whipped through her body like a shockwave. Her eardrums and lungs felt like they’d exploded from the pressure. For a split second the sidewalk rolled and bucked beneath them as if they were on a boat. 

It took a moment for the truth to sink in. A bomb.

 Her heart hammered against her ribs. Hunter was still on top of her, his arms crossed over her head and face to shield her. She didn’t dare move. People were screaming, running past them, even over them. Hunter grunted when someone stepped on him, but he didn’t budge from his position atop her. She could hear the sound of glass shattering close by, hitting the ground somewhere behind them with a sharp crash. The smell of smoke and burning wreckage was already thick in the air, as well as an audible roar that pulsed against her throbbing eardrums. 

When the mass of panicking people around them began to thin out, Hunter’s weight finally lifted from her. She sucked in a shaky breath, her compressed lungs aching with the effort, and dared to lift her head. Only to witness a scene straight out of hell.

Excerpt from SECRET GUARDIAN by Jill Sanders:

“Quiet!” He tried to get her to stop screaming. If they played their cards right, the men would just assume they’d been lost in the forest and wouldn’t think they were dumb enough to slide down a two-hundred-foot cliff on their backs.

Finally, he could feel his momentum slowing and felt a little relieved. He chanced a look ahead of them and almost screamed himself. There in front of him was a great drop off. He let go of Ann with one hand and reached for anything to stop their speed.

Damn! They were heading for the edge and he had no clue what was at the bottom. “Grab hold of something,” he grunted.

She began to frantically grab hold of tiny twigs and branches as they flew by their heads. Finally, about ten feet from the edge, he grabbed a hold of a large vine and felt himself slowing. When the vine ripped out of the ground from their weight, he dug his hand into the ground as Ann held onto his waist. Mud coated his back and legs and he even felt some down his pants.

Finally, they came to a slow stop less than two feet from the rocky edge. They lay there, holding each other, breathing heavily. He rested his head back in the mud and looked up through the thick leaves to the blue sky above, thanking God they had stopped.

He heard shouting and pushed himself up, pulling her with him. He rushed to the edge and looked over and was happy to see a deep river about twenty feet below them.

“We aren’t done with the ride yet, Princess. Make sure to cross your feet when you land.” He grabbed her hand and when she nodded, they both jumped as far as they could into the open air.

Excerpt from LEGAL EASE by Lori Ryan:

As they stood looking up at the church windows, Jack wrapped his arms around Kelly from behind and pulled her close to him, resting his chin on the top of her head. He dipped his head to her neck and nuzzled her soft skin, enjoying the feel of her softness against him and the sweet smell of her. She always smelled so good to Jack and he wondered if it was a perfume or just an exceptional combination of her shampoo and innate sweetness.

Kelly tilted her head and opened her neck to him and Jack kissed a trail across the back of her neck as he slowly enjoyed the feel of her skin on his lips. Her skin was soft and warm and it made him linger to feel her more. He leisurely worked his way up to one ear where he quietly tugged her earlobe with his teeth before he caressed the same lobe with his lips to soften the bite. Kelly moaned and dipped her head, giving him better access.

Jack turned Kelly in his arms and kissed along the soft line of her jaw, then slowly worked his way to her mouth, with sweet, soft kisses. When he got to her mouth, he abandoned the gentleness and covered her supple mouth with his. Kelly responded to him, rising up on her toes to get closer to him. Her small fists closed in on his shirt and she gripped the fabric over his hard chest the way they had when he kissed her under the tree in her parents’ yard, but this time she didn’t stop, but kept pulling him closer, sending Jack’s body into overdrive.

Jack’s tongue swept into her mouth, first entering to play with the tip of her tongue, then plunging deeper. Kelly pressed her body against the hardness of Jack’s chest and torso and Jack felt her nipples brush against him sending a rush to his groin and he wanted to lay her down in the grass and feel every inch of her heated skin on his, to bury himself in her curves.

Jack ended the kiss, but held his forehead to her forehead as he caught his breath for a minute. “Sorry,” he said, his voice raw. “I forgot for a minute that we were in a public park.”

“Mm hmm,” said Kelly as if she didn’t trust herself with words.

Jack chuckled. “Maybe we should skip the show? I can always get us tickets for another time.” Kelly nodded and they turned to walk back to the car.

Neither of them noticed the dark sedan pull out from the curb as they walked away.

My Review

5 unforgettable stars!

My first Kele Moon book and I have to say I loved it! I was totally captivated by Wyatt and Tabitha's story. This is the kind of story that makes you believe in heroes and happily ever after. In other words, my favorite kind of story.

Wyatt Conner is a force to be reckon with. He's a sixth generation sheriff in his hometown of Garnet County and he's a former MMA fighter. He's set in his ways and all about following the rules.

But he wasn't always like that. When he was younger, he fell in love and was loved until circumstances beyond his control took it away from him. His one and only love left him a broken and bitter man who lived only for his job and his duty.

It was interesting to read Wyatt's story. Although I've read his story first, I have since then read the other books in the series and it was already hinted in those books about Wyatt's lost love. In Crossing the Line, we finally hear his story...well, not just his but Tabitha's as well.

What I loved about this book is how this one went back to the moment when Wyatt and Tabitha met. We weren't just given snippets or flashbacks of it, we get their whole story. I usually feel ambivalent when authors go back to the past but here, it was needed. Readers needed to see Wyatt before he became bitter and cynical. I needed to see for myself if what he had with Tabitha was real. And it was as real as it can get.

Although, they fell in love at a very young age, you feel their connection and their chemistry was awesome. Tabitha was pretty much vilified in the previous books as being the bitch who left Wyatt. But here, we get to see her shitty childhood and the horrors she went through. But most of all, we get to see her love for Wyatt. She wasn't some flighty, manipulative girl who left Wyatt in the dust. She was someone who really loved him and continues to love him in spite being apart for 13 years. I felt that her reasons for leaving was valid. Of course, I would have rather that she stayed and left but I understood.

She had a victim mentality. Usually, I hate that in my heroines but honestly, after reading her story, I couldn't really blame her. I guess abuse does that to a person and her fear was just palpable, it was heartbreaking. She really thought she was protecting Wyatt by leaving. Their story was very sad.

Like the rest of the series, the secondary characters figured prominently in this book. We get to actually see Wyatt's family; his grandfather and father and how these men actually both loved and lost. I also loved the glimpse into his relationship with his twin Jules. They were hilarious. And of course, we find out about Clay and Wyatt's relationship before they became best of friends. Nova, Tino and Romeo were prominent fixtures too, especially Nova. I got to say, I can't wait for his book. It's going to be interesting.

This book is definitely a winner for me. I loved it. I loved the ending and that epilogue was so worth it. The characters weren't perfect and they've made some questionable choices that had me shaking my head in disbelief but I still ended up rooting for them. I'd definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for a steamy yet heartfelt read. :)

Hi, Kele! I loved Crossing the Line. One of the best books I've read this year. Thank you for answering my questions on such a short notice.

WOW! Thank you!! I can’t think of a better compliment than that!

>First question is pretty standard. What's your inspiration behind this series and Crossing the Line in particular?

I think the first vision of the series started with the idea of a rough and gruff fighter sitting alone on Thanksgiving when a down on her luck waitress buys him a piece of pie. The ideas for the other two books quickly bloomed in the first few chapters of writing Defying the Odds as Jules and Wyatt sort of wrote themselves in as Clay’s two best friends. They both had such big personalities I knew each of them needed their own books.

I knew from the get go that Wyatt had a lost love and I knew the reasons she left. In the first two books, Tabitha is sort of portrayed in a dark light because no one knew her reasons for leaving, but I always knew. I knew how deeply she loved him. My vision for Crossing the Line was always one of true love, undying love, a love that lasted forever and sustained even the most violent of storms. I’m just so happy, now that it’s written, that I was actually able to capture the vision with Wyatt and Tabitha’s story. I really am very proud of it!

>There were a lot of very emotional and heart-wrenching scenes in the book, which scene was the most difficult to write emotionally?

For anyone who has read the book It should be pretty obvious which one was the most difficult, though I won’t give it away here. I cried so hard and so long writing that scene that my face was swollen for days after I was done. It wasn’t the only part in the book that made me cry while I was writing it, but that one was far and away the most heart wrenching.

>Who's your favorite secondary character in Crossing the Line?

Nova! I cannot wait to write his book!

>The ideas on heroes and villians were such strong elements in the book, who's your favorite hero of all time and why? And who's the one villian that really makes your hackles rise?

Probably Percy Jackson. I love him! Really, I love all the demigods in the Heroes of Olympus series! It’s almost hard to choose between them!

Villain, I think it’d be Bellatrix Lestrange from Harry Potter. Even more so than Voldermort, she scared the heck out of me. There’s something so terrifying about an evil blind follower!
