Marlene Parker was eight months pregnant when the love of her life walked out on her to pursue his dreams of being a musician. She felt devastated, betrayed and she swore to herself not to let it happen again.
Luke Anderson was finally living his dream but at the expense of the woman he loves and their unborn child. After four years of regret and loneliness, Luke is finally ready to face his responsibilities.
Love of a Rockstar is a story about Marlene and Luke. Marlene is a pastry chef and Luke is a rockstar. The second-chance-at-love trope is one of my fave tropes in romance and LOAR delivered that and then some.
This is not your typical rock star story. At the heart of it, this book is all about family. After the fallout with Luke, Marlene has to deal with her family, who didn't approve of Luke in the first place. She has to deal with being a single mother with limited prospects having to put her dream of going to pastry school in Paris when she got pregnant. And she has to deal with raising Nil, her adorable 4-year old daughter.
At first, I was put a little off by Marlene. She came off as a little too snide for my taste. But as the story went along and I got a glimpse into her past relationship with Luke, I was won over. My heart breaks for her and as a mother myself, I recognized the sheer amount of pressure she felt raising her daughter alone.
Luke grew on me too! I thought I might hate him because of what he did but when things starts coming to light, I was enamored with him as Marlene was. Yes, what he did was unconscionable but I really felt his regret and sorrow. And the fact that (view spoiler)
I did a few quibbles though...
♪♪I didn't like Camille especially after I found out what she did. Her advice to Marlene was mind-boggling.
♪♪ The Finn angle was a little anti-climactic. He was there and then he just disappeared. LoL! Poor guy.
♪♪ The ending was a little abrupt. I still have a lot of questions. This is one of those books that needs a long-ass epilogue and it has none. I'm sad. :(
Love of a Rockstar is a solid debut by Ms.Simone, and such as it is, a very satisfying read. I'll definitely be reading more from this author.
